Stryker Hip Recall Attorneys
Hip replacement patients across the United States are filing Stryker hip lawsuits to pursue just compensation for their damages after being implanted with defective Stryker Rejuvenate or Stryker ABG II Modular Hip systems. Due to serious design defects, Stryker hips have been known to corrode and release dangerous levels of cobalt ions into the body, leading to serious and potentially permanent side effects including metal poisoning known as metallosis.
If you have a Stryker Rejuvenate or ABG II hip replacement and have experienced pain, swelling, elevated cobalt levels in your blood (metallosis or metal poisoning), a corrective revision surgery, or other complications, you may be able to collect significant compensation from the manufacturer of the implant, Stryker Orthopedics. Stryker Hip Problems
A number of serious problems have been linked to faulty Stryker Rejuvenate and Stryker ABG II Modular Hip systems. Potentially the most serious of these problems is corrosion of the metal components in these implants, which can lead to debilitating pain and the need for another hip replacement surgery. Some consequences of Stryker hip corrosion include:
Metallosis
This type of metal toxicity is caused when a faulty implant releases cobalt and chromium into the blood stream. This causes heightened levels of metal in the body, and can lead to pain, swelling, difficulty standing or walking.
Osteolysis (Bone Dissolution)
The body can initiate an autoimmune response when parts of a Stryker hip implant wear off as a result of pressure and friction. This response, which triggers tissue resorption of living bone tissue, may not display any symptoms but can cause weakened bones to fracture and may also cause loosening of the hip implant.
Galvanic Corrosion
When two metals are wet, an electrochemical process known as galvanic corrosion can cause the metals to react and corrode.
Crevice Corrosion
This type of corrosion often occurs between the socket and the ball of a Stryker hip or between crevices in the shaft or neck of a hip replacement system.
Fretting Corrosion
This type of corrosion can cause damage to contact surfaces. Other adverse reactions that patients have suffered in response to faulty Stryker hips include pseudo-tumors, bone and tissue necrosis, fluid in the joint, inflammation of the synovial membrane (synovitis), decreased lymphocytic cells, decreased CD8+T cells, chromosomal aberrations, and even DNA changes.
Stryker Hip Safety Warning and Recalls
Stryker voluntarily issued an Urgent Field Safety Notice for Corrective Action regarding Rejuvenate replacement hips in April 2012, stating that these hips posed a possibility of metallosis (metal toxicity) in patients. Stryker indicated that metallosis could lead to severe pain and serious injuries, including tissue damage and death, allergic reactions, immunological problems, and bone damage that may result from heightened levels of cobalt in the blood.
On July 4, 2012, a national recall was issued for Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II Modular Hip systems as a result of numerous reports of problems with corrosion and fretting noted in both of these artificial hip joint systems. The Stryker Rejuvenate system was also recalled in Canada in May 2012.
